Raising Standards in a Tough Year: Reflections on Care in 2025

As 2025 draws to a close, we want to pause for a moment, to reflect, and to recognise the incredible work happening across the care sector.

This has been a year full of challenges such as rising costs, staffing shortages, tighter regulations, and growing pressure to deliver on sustainability. Yet through every conversation we have had, visit or review, one message has been clear:

Care teams remain unwavering in their commitment to safe, dignified, person-centred care, even when the landscape feels tougher than ever.

At Acticare, we’ve been honoured to stand alongside homes and groups through these pressures, helping teams protect standards while making resources work harder. And despite the obstacles, 2025 has also been a year of resilience, progress and meaningful change.

A Year of Pressure and Resilience

Across the homes we support, we’ve seen:

  • Budgets stretched as costs rise
  • Staffing gaps making day-to-day consistency harder
  • Increasing expectations around sustainability, compliance and quality

Although these factors have put more strain on the care sector, the word that best describes this year is resilience.

Leaders have rethought how they buy, what they use, and where complexity or waste can be cut. Teams have embraced clearer processes, improved product consistency, and made data-driven decisions to ensure every pound counts.

It’s proof that raising standards doesn’t always mean spending more but, it starts with using less but using it better.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Some of the most powerful improvements we’ve seen this year have been simple:

  • Standardising purchasing across homes to create consistency and reduce risk
  • Simplifying product ranges so teams know exactly what to use and when
  • Introducing usage and spend reviews to spot waste and uncover smarter alternatives

These changes have helped homes cut unnecessary stock, remove duplicated product lines, improve ordering accuracy, and avoid last-minute reactive buying.

This is what we call cost without compromise. This ensure standards are protected, performance improves and waste is reduced.

What We’ve Learned as a Partner in 2025

This year has reinforced something we’ve always believed: Care homes don’t just need suppliers. They need partners.

That means understanding each home’s structure, pressures and goals and then helping them make data-backed decisions that protect standards while reducing overuse.

In 2025 we’ve strengthened:

Product reviews and smart buying

We help homes cut usage instead of just swapping products. Data on use, costs per resident, and waste guides smart buying. Our reports in eco-cleaning guidance boost waste reduction and transparency.

Standardisation and simplification across groups

Standardising equipment and cleaning protocols has resulted in cleaner spaces, improved compliance, and controlled spending.

Our sustainability journey

We’ve reduced our environmental impact, helped homes do the same, and promoted resource-efficient practices in line with our Planet Mark certification and sustainability pledge.

Investment in our people and brand

We’ve strengthened internal processes, improved communication tools, and aligned our brand more closely with our promise: To make the lives of care home teams simpler, safer and better every day.

Looking Ahead to 2026

In 2026, Acticare will continue to:

  • Help groups use data to do more with less
  • Drive standardisation and simplification across product ranges
  • Invest in sustainable, efficient, high-quality solutions
  • Deliver the insight and partnership homes need to navigate rising pressures with confidence

Above all, we’ll keep listening, because the best solutions start with understanding the people who rely on them.
